Social Media Trends in 2011

Each year I look forward to ReadWriteWeb’s predictions for the next year because, like you, I’m curious to know what ‘the next big thing” is going to be. Today, ReadWriteWeb published 10 Ways Social Media Will Change in 2011:

  1. Social media will be supersized
  2. Companies will integrate social feedback into their decision making process
  3. Mobile will become our gateway to the world
  4. Video will be everywhere
  5. The next big Online Social Network will not be a network at all
  6. ROI will be redefined
  7. Psychology is shifting
  8. Citizen activism brings back purpose and power
  9. Social business intelligence will heat up and so will privacy
  10. The role of the social media strategist will be changing

One of the biggest questions I always seem to be asked is “What’s the next thing?” and I’ve always found the ReadWriteWeb’s predictions a good indicator of that. At the same time, I do always want to advocate for good Web Engagement Management strategies.

Some of the surprising bits were the Video, not in terms of increased use, but with the NFB’s complaint against Penn State the article did not mention transcripts and accessibility impacts or how video content affects SEO–if it can’t index the transcript then how does it get ranked?

I enjoyed the emphasis on analytics for the influence in decision making and ROI, positioning communicators and “Social Media Specialists” at the forefront of helping the decision makers of our organizations.

This is a great article and one to certainly keep in mind over the next year to see how these predictions pan out.

What are your predictions for 2011?
